According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, schools are required to provide accommodations for children with a visual impairment. However, the schools are not required to provide the same accommodations for these children at home. This leaves children with a visual impairment without the resources to maintain the same level of academic growth and personal achievement while at home.
Listed below is the assistive technology that can enable children with a visual impairment to become self-sufficient in their academic studies and personal growth while at home.
Any child birth through 21 with a visual impairment, their family, teacher, or Para professional may write a letter of request to the Nebraska Foundation for Visually Impaired Children. The NFVIC meets monthly and will act promptly with the request. The NFVIC would like to receive a letter from a teacher, parent, student needing the request (if able to write a letter) and any other representative from an additional agency working with that student.
