Scholarship Opportunities

 

Below are listed some scholarship opportunities for graduating blind or visually impaired Nebraskan students. As deadlines could be extended for the application process, we encourage you to visit the web site of the organization and/or entity linked to. Additionally, it is important to check with the financial aid department of a college or university of your choice for other local community scholarships that are not listed here. You might meet the academic, sport, or musical criterion for additional scholarships not related to your visual disability.

The ACB offers scholarships between $500 - $4,000 for both undergraduate and graduate levels of studies and will be given out during their annual convention in July. Their deadline is March 1. You do not have to be an ACB member to apply for these scholarships.

The Association of Blind Citizens will offer ten thousand dollars in college scholarships to legally blind individuals seeking a college degree. The Reggie Johnson Memorial Scholarship will be valued at $2000 and eight $1000 scholarships will be available. Deadline is April 15.

The AER offers 2 $500 scholarships for students to pursue a career in Services for the Blind. Their deadline is April 15.

The AFB offers 5 different scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate levels of education. There deadline is April 30.

The CRS offers scholarships for undergraduate students. While amounts may very, they can range in amounts upwards of $500. Their deadline is April 1.

 

Council of Citizens with Low Vision International (CCLVI)

This competitive scholarship is available to full-time college students with low vision, chosen from among those who meet the visual acuity and academic Guidelines. Forms for each year are available January 1 through April for downloading from this website. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than April 15. Winners are announced during their annual meeting which is held in conjunction with the American Council of the Blind National Convention.

This scholarship awards 12-16 recipients up to $15,000. This is an on-line application for senior high school students who are legally blind. Application must be submitted by September 15 of the start of the senior year. Students must be college bound.

These scholarships reward excellence, recognize accomplishments and help students who are blind or partially sighted pursue their academic and career goals. Applications must be submitted online.

Lions Clubs International is a service club organization whose local club members are all volunteers. As an administrative office, Lions Clubs International Headquarters does not provide social services or referrals, determine the types of services our 45,000 local clubs may choose to offer or decide their criteria for assistance.  A local Lions club in or near your community may sponsor a program that provides assistance for scholarships or educational needs such as the purchase of assistive equipment.  To request assistance, please contact a Lions club near you.

The NFB gives 30 scholarships for post-secondary students and will be given out during their annual convention in July. Their deadline is March 31. You do not have to be a NFB member to apply for these scholarships.

The Mary P. Oenslager Scholastic Achievement Award offers nine awards annually in three categories: three Scholastic Achievement Award winners receive $6,000 each; three Special Honors winners receive $3,000 each; and three Honors winners receive $1,000 each. Applicants must be legally blind, registered with Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, hold a bachelor's degree, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Deadline varies. Check their site for updated information.
